FREE Fall Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Calendar Date:
Friday, October 10, 2014 - 12:00pm to 5:00pm

Lane County's Public Works Department is hosting this disposal opportunity.  County Transfer & Recycling, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, the City of Florence, and the Lane County Master Recyclers have made donations of equipment, disposal costs, staff time, and volunteer time.  As long as the community needs the event the County will continue hosting it.  Please participate or encourage others to do so to preserve this County service here locally in Florence.

Using the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center is easy:

Keep wastes in their original labeled containers if possible, or label known items. Secure containers in a box to keep them from tipping over in transit. Enter the Florence Transfer Station and follow signs to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Please stay inside your vehicle. Our staff will unload the waste for you. There is no charge for this service

Where:  Florence Transfer Site--2820 Rhododendron Dr. (next to Humane Society)

When:
         • Friday, October 10th, 12 – 5 pm
         • Saturday, October 11th, 8am - 2 pm

What to bring:
Bring paint, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, and just about any other household hazardous waste. Check labels for words like flammable, corrosive, poison, caution, and danger.

Don't bring:
Empty containers, radioactive waste, asbestos or explosives. Any empty containers can be safely thrown in the trash. For information about disposal of radioactive waste, asbestos and explosives, call Lane County Waste Management Division at 682-3828. Also, Lane County accepts sharps, oil, antifreeze, and batteries of all types year-round at all refuse disposal sites. Call 682-4120 for more information.

What about hazardous waste from businesses?
Businesses which generate small amounts of hazardous waste may pre-register to bring that waste to this event. Businesses must pay for disposal of the waste, but most can save money by using this program, rather than hiring a contractor on their own. For more information about this program, call Lane County Waste Management Division at 682-4120.  To download the registration form, go to the Lane County Hazardous Waste page.

What about Latex Paint?
Latex paint is the most common item received at Hazardous Waste Roundups – but it isn’t a hazardous waste! Buy only what you need, use up leftover paint, offer it to friends or neighbor. Please note that household paints can now be dropped off year round at the Florence Habitat ReStore through the PaintCare program; containers must have the original label in place. The ReStore is located at 2016 Hwy 101.

What About Electronic Waste?
The Glenwood, Cottage Grove, Florence, Veneta and Vida transfer sites accept the following items for free during normal operating hours (maximum of seven items at a time): televisions, computer monitors, CPU’s and laptops. Appointments are required for more than seven items; call 682-3111 for an appointment. Other items also accepted include VCR’s, cell phones, telephones, DVD players, printers, typewriters, fax machines and video game systems. There is a $35.00 charge for large copy or printing machines.

For more information call 541 997-8237

If you can't make it to a rural roundup, the household hazardous waste facility in Eugene, at the Glenwood Receiving Station, is available year round. Call 541-682-3111 to make an appointment.
