What is Economic Development?

Economic Development is a term that means many different things to many different people. If you ask twenty people what a successful community is you will likely receive twenty different answers. A simple definition is that economic development is the sustained and collective work of organizations, citizens, and policy makers to promote an environment with a positive standard of living. For Florence, economic development means establishing efforts that seek to create and/or retain jobs.

The City of Florence’s strategy for economic development is a three legged stool:

  • Business Retention & Expansion
  • Business Marketing & Recruitment
  • Entrepreneurs & Innovation

All three of these strategies are being addressed to achieve the goals of stable development and prosperity.
