City of Florence Council Vacancy

 The City of Florence is seeking interested parties to fill a vacancy on the City Council for a term expiring December 31, 2026. Applicants need to have resided within the Florence City limits for at least one year prior to appointment and be a registered voter.

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Applications will be reviewed by the Florence City Council and applicants may be invited to interviews with the Council planned for February 27, 2025. 

City Council Role

Members of the Florence City Council are the policy and decision-making leaders for the City of Florence. The Florence City Council provides oversight to the City Manager and the Municipal Court Judge. The City Council provides decision making through official actions and direction at public City Council meetings to the City Manager. The City Manager serves as the administrative head of the government of the City and oversees implementation of City Council policy decisions and direction. Service on the City Council is a voluntary position and offers an opportunity for residents to become involved in their City government.

The Florence City Council meets regularly on the first and third Mondays of each month at 5:30 p.m. and holds work sessions on the Thursday following each regular meeting at 8:30 a.m. In addition, Florence City Councilors serve as ex-officio members on one or more City committees and often represent Florence at many different events and groups.

Interviews

Applicants invited for an interview will meet with the City Council in person at City Hall (250 Hwy 101) Interview questions will include the following:

  1. What unique skills, experience, or qualifications could you bring to the City Council position?
  2. What do you perceive to be the current challenges and opportunities facing Florence?
  3. Please tell us about your involvement in community or civic activities.
  4. What do you believe to be the top concerns of the business community and what role does local government participate in that?
  5. What are your ideas for improving the livability for the citizens of Florence?
  6. How do you give back to the community?
  7. If selected, what will you add to the existing council?
  8. Do you have any comments you would like to mention or do you have any questions of us?
  9. The City Council has created and adopted a Norms document which is a relationship contract on how they agree to work together, with staff, and the community. You have been provided a copy of the document. The City Council has the expectation that these norms will be adhered to. If selected, could you abide by these norms with the other Council members, staff, and the community?
