City of Florence Appoints New Police Chief
The City of Florence is excited to announce the appointment of John Pitcher as the City’s new Chief of Police, effective July 1, 2022. This comes after John was appointed the Interim Chief of Police on May 6, 2022.
“During his career, John has been fully engaged with the community, focused on high quality law enforcement, and committed to keeping the public safe. His outstanding qualifications, extensive experience with the City, and his leadership, particularly in the last year, has given me confidence in his ability to continue to lead the department forward,” said City Manager Erin Reynolds. “John has the full support of the Department, City staff, the City Council, and our many partner agencies.”
John is a 34-year veteran of the Florence Police Department with experience in the department as an Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Commander. John has a multitude of certifications from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), including Executive Level Certifications for Corrections and Police Officer. In his time with the City of Florence, John has reported over 1500 hours of public safety training that has been recognized by the State. Prior to coming to the City of Florence as a Police Officer, John served in the US Air Force. John also has two sons that are active law enforcement officers in Oregon.
“We have a high standard of excellence for our police department and John has shown a strong commitment to maintaining that going forward for the City of Florence,” said Mayor Henry.
As Police Chief, John will also manage several current City initiatives, including the Florence Police Department’s upcoming participation in National Night Out on August 2, 2022.
“I am humbled and honored to lead the Florence Police Department as Chief,” said John Pitcher. “I am firmly committed to keeping lines of communication open with the community and maintaining trust between our officers and the public. My focus is to continue serving our residents at the highest level and working closely with the exceptional members of the Florence Police Department and the City of Florence.”
The City plans to formally recognize the appointment at the upcoming July 18, 2022 City Council Meeting.
