Public Works Introduces New Park

Recently named the "Exploding Whale Memorial Park," the new park provides views of the Siuslaw River and Bridge as well as the iconic sand dunes on the South side of the river.

Park amenities include a shelter with picnic tables and a nice grassy area to enjoy a picnic on a sunny day.  The parking lot, bike racks and the concrete sidewalk connection to Rhododendron Drive are complete.  A gate has been installed to prevent vehicles from driving down the new gravel multi-use path, but a clear four (4) foot opening is provided to allow ADA access as well as people wishing to take their canoe or kayak to the river.

The project was funded by two highly competitive grants the city received, one from the Land Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)  and the other from Oregon State Park’s Local Government Grant Program (LGGP) .   These grants allowed for the acquisition of the land, development of the parking area and amenities, including trail construction.
