Food Waste Prevention Week

Food Waste Prevention Week is April 7-13, 2025.

Background

Food Waste Prevention Week 2025 (April 7-13) is more than just an event—it’s a movement!

Per foodwastepreventionweek.com, "After meeting with the founders of California's Food Waste Prevention Week in 2020, the Florida collaborative decided to make Florida Food Waste Prevention Week a reality. After a wildly successful inaugural year in 2021, states, cities and organizations have joined what has become the National Food Waste Prevention Week movement."

Why is Food Waste Prevention Important?

It Saves Money! Wasting food can be expensive. Every year, Americans lose more than $218 billion on wasted food. By reducing the amount of food waste in your household, your family can save money.

It Reduces Hunger in Our Communities! In the US, approximately 40% of all food grown and produced is never eaten. That's food that could be going to those experiencing food insecurity.

It Protects the Environment! Reducing food waste is the #1 personal action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while safeguarding critical natural resources. When food is wasted, it goes into a landfill. Once in a landfill, food waste breaks down and emits greenhouse gasses, including carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Methane is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide, making it more damaging to the environment. If we reduce food waste, we could save the environment from this damage.
